Flannery Plant Hire’s managing director, Patrick Flannery explains how the company has been coping and adapting to the coronavirus outbreak.
The business’s primary focus, as always is the health, safety and wellbeing of our people, customers and commercial partners during this time. Contingency plans to manage and minimise the risk to people were put in place and will continue to evolve as this situation changes over the coming days, weeks and months. As a business we remain committed to delivering excellence in the provision of self-drive and operated plant hire. The steps we have taken aim to support us, our customers, and our supply chain.
A high proportion of our operators have been and continue to be out onsite delivering excellent service to our customers. As always, they are supported by CPCS qualified trainers who are available to advise and maintain our excellent safety standards. We believe that regular contact with our operators is more important now than ever and the team are aware of the safe working practices for this.
Our training team has delivered Toolbox talks and reminders on the importance of handwashing and hygiene. We have also now recorded and distributed remote Toolbox Talks to complement our online training videos. This allows us to maintain a consistent message and stay in touch. We have seen excellent online uptake of these videos and will continue to use these as a mechanism over the coming weeks and months to complement the great work done by our trainers.
Furthermore, our depot and delivery teams undergo regular briefings to ensure they are up to date with the latest developments. They are equipped with hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes and all plant and equipment are being rigorously cleaned at off-hire and pre-delivery.
Alongside this our in-house Occupational Health Specialist has been providing great advice not just on social distancing and COVID-19 symptoms but also on mental health and wellbeing, staying healthy and boosting our immune systems. An advice sheet covering these useful tips has been circulated to all operators. Our team of Mental Health first aiders also continue to be available to all staff.
As an employer we look to recruit around thirty-five apprentices each year, the biggest impact of COVID-19 for this group of Flannery operators is those just starting out, as the National Construction College has now closed. We are communicating with them regularly, pointing them in the direction of some online courses and including them in social activities to keep morale up and ensure they feel part of the team. We will stay in close contact with the college during this time, to ensure our apprentices are prepared to return as soon as it reopens. We will continue to run remote interviews for new recruits over the coming weeks with the plan to have them commencing the programme as soon as it is safe to do so.
It has been fantastic over the last few weeks to see a positive up take in online Bite Size careers advise sessions that we have organised on Zoom. Supported by the CITB and some major infrastructure projects these fully interactive session have proved a great way to find out more about what our fantastic industry has to offer and hear from some current apprentices. Details of the next session should be posted on our Facebook soon.
It is difficult to describe it as “business as usual” given the amount of disruption we have all faced over the past ten weeks. The team, however, have proved that we can provide the excellent service our customers expect and continue with our engagement initiatives and training in a safe way. I am immensely proud of everyone’s efforts and feel positive that we will continue to drive the business forwards over the coming weeks and months.
